India Ink and Brush for value and line variety
This approach is similar to Blocking in a Page, in which you preserve the highlights (lightest light areas) while filling much of the page in with a mid-tone gray.
Mix a few drops of India Ink or a dark concentrated watercolor paint into a small container of water.
Test the tone/value on a piece of scap paper. Add some more ink or watercolor if you want a darker mid-tone.
Be aware that you can always put another layer of light ink on top of another to make a darker tone, but you cannot take away ink that you have put on the paper. Therefore, I recommend that you use a mixture that is on the lighter side of mid-tone gray.
